Get Rid Of The Saying ‘I don’t have time’ Once And For All

12 October, 2015

How many times do you think you have used the phrase ‘I don’t have time’ and I don’t just mean today. Do these words make you feel good? Do you become more productive by saying them? Do you look forward to saying it?

No? I didn’t think so, neither do I.

The phrase ‘I don’t have time’ is simply a reaction to emotion you are feeling. It doesn’t exist, it is how you are choosing to express how you feel.

‘I don’t have time’ = ‘I feel (insert your emotion here)

‘I don’t have time’ = ‘I feel overwhelmed/frustrated/ trapped/ scared’

I don’t have time’ is not productive or helpful.

Why do we say it then, instead of how we actually feel?

We want to be able to do it all, we want to be able to take on everything that is thrown at us and we want to please…everyone! We just can’t help ourselves, however this mindset in the end doesn’t actually help anyone.

The best we can do, is what we are physically able to do in the here and now. When you hear yourself say those words, STOP and let yourself feel what you are actually experiencing.

If you are actually feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath and let yourself feel this emotion, as soon as you start to listen to how you feel you will instantly start to feel better and gain clarity on current the situation.

This might mean to move forward you need to…

  • Write a priority list
  • Say a no to a social event
  • Book in a rest day
  • Or even go for a run to just clear your head

Next time you hear yourself say the words ‘I don’t have time’ use it as a prompt to check in with yourself and consider what is out of balance in your life right now.

“A man is but the product of his thoughts-what he thinks, he becomes.”

Mahatma Gandhi

Reframe ‘I don’t have time’ to something that will nourish and motivate you.

‘I’m going to get early night so I feel fresh and ready to take on tomorrow’

‘I need to schedule in some me time in order to meet this deadline’

‘To take on this task I need a clear head, that means I am going for a run tonight.’
